Swim Safety (Part II)

This great article from Dr. Perri Klass in the New York Times is a reminder of the need to ALWAYS supervise children in the pool. It's a good follow-up to our discussion of so-called "dry drowning" last week.

As she discusses, swim lessons might help a little, but they are not a substitute for constant supervision of kids in the pool. An adult needs to be tasked with just watching the children- not cooking, reading, on their phone, running inside to check on the baby, etc....

Drowning is usually silent. There won't be a cry for help, so make sure an adult is monitoring the pool constantly. If possible, put up a pool fence that keeps kids away when you're not around. Teach your kids that they are not allowed to go in the water unless a grown-up is nearby.
