Marijuana may Harm a Developing Fetus or a Nursing Newborn

Over the last year, New Jersey has expanded its medical marijuana program to include a wider array of medical problems. As more people begin to use marijuana (medically or recreationally), questions have been raised about potential harms of marijuana use in pregnancy or while nursing. This article describes the American Academy of Pediatrics' recent policy on this issue.

Earlier studies have shown potential harm to a developing fetus. Newer data shows marijuana can be found in breast milk up to 6 days after last using it. Based on these findings, the AAP recommends that pregnant or nursing women avoid marijuana use.
