           There are 2 primary reasons we require multiple doses of vaccines. First, to learn how to fight off certain infections, our immune system needs repeat reminders spread out over months or years. This is why infants receive so many repeat vaccine doses in their first several months.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Secondly, with some vaccines, our protection can wane over the years. Those that contain live antigens (like measles, mumps, and rubella)  can provide longer protection with just two doses, but vaccines that have non-live antigens create protection that will dissipate as time passes, requiring additional doses to protect against the danger. This is why we all need tetanus boosters every 10 years. There is also a growing recognition that the immune system of older individuals weakens, so they need boosters to prevent shingles, pneumonia, and meningitis.

           Should your child get a flu shot? At what age do they need it? And when?

           According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all kids should get the influenza vaccine to protect them from the flu annually, beginning at 6 months of age. This shot should be received ideally by the end of October as it takes a couple of weeks to provide full protection. Young children may need 2 doses (1 month apart) to be fully protected.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;

           What is the Flu?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The flu, short for influenza, is an infection caused by a virus. It can often infect the nose, the throat, and the lungs. In other words, all parts of your respiratory system. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           It is common to confuse the flu with a stomach bug that includes vomiting and diarrhea. True influenza does not typically present with these symptoms. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;

           Who is at Risk for the Flu?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Because the flu is contagious, many people are likely to come in contact with it and become infected. Most will get better on their own without even visiting the doctor. However, there are a few people who are more at risk for having complications —- including a fatal outcome. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Who is at risk for flu complications? 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Young children, especially those who are 2 years old or younger
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Children with asthma, heart disease, or who are immunocompromised
           &#xD;

           The best treatment for the flu is often plenty of rest and lots of liquids. Saltwater gargles for sore throats (for kids old enough) and over-the-counter fever-reducer/pain relievers are also very helpful in getting through this sickness.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Viral infections are often hard to treat with medication because they do not respond to antibiotics. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           For children at high risk of complications, there are antiviral medications that can reduce the risk of severe complications and may help to reduce the symptoms of the flu. These drugs will not make it disappear but may make your child more comfortable getting through it.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Antiviral medications can only be prescribed by your pediatrician. They cannot be purchased over the counter.

One hour can easily become two and then four or more. As a result, very few kids get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Finding ways to keep kids active now can boost physical and mental health, as well as improve performance in school and result in better sleep, too. Not addressing this inactivity could, unfortunately, set them up for many health issues down the road.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Parents, here are 5 ways to keep kids active.

           1. Sign Up for a Sport

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If there is a sport or activity that your child has shown interest in, consider signing them up. Depending on what it is, you may find that local schools, community centers, or private local facilities may offer them.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This could include signing kids up for team sports, such as basketball, soccer, or baseball, or things like karate, gymnastics, swimming, or even skating. Not only would they have designated times each week that would require them to attend and be active, but practicing in between can be encouraged.

You can take things to play with there, go for a bike ride, or even enjoy a stroll through the park as a family. Finding a park with a playground can be a game-changer.

           You can always stick to the same park or switch things up by visiting different parks throughout your area.

If you stay at home to work out, offer them things they can do alongside you, such as jumping rope, running on the treadmill, etc.

           What do you do if your child gets the flu? What are the symptoms of the flu? How long should your child stay out of school? Here is everything you need to know about helping your child feel better while keeping everyone else safe.

           Knowing how the flu is spread enables you to make informed decisions concerning your child’s health and well-being.

           The flu is spread from person to person just like most other viruses.

           When close to someone who has the flu, such as while in a classroom, small droplets that come from sneezing, coughing, or even talking can make their way into the air. They can then be inhaled through the mouth or nose and into the body. Of course, these droplets can also land on surfaces where others pick them up.

           When Are Kids With the Flu Contagious? 
          &#xD;

           Generally, children are most contagious within the first 3 to 4 days of having the flu. It isn’t uncommon, however, for it to spread the day before showing symptoms — and up to 10 days after.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Being around anyone during this time can put them at risk.

           The onset of the virus for those who become infected can start anytime within about 4 days of contracting it. For many, these symptoms will first show up 1 to 3 days after contact.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Symptoms of the Flu

           There is a common misconception when it comes to the flu. Many assume that it is a stomach illness, but it mostly impacts the throat, nose, and sometimes the lungs, too. A few common symptoms to look out for are:

  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;

            A fever of 100°F and higher

           Treating the Flu

           For most viral infections, such as the flu, much of the focus is on treating the symptoms. In other words, taking over-the-counter pain relievers to reduce flu and manage body aches, as well as staying hydrated are often recommended.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Often, this is all that is needed and your child will begin to feel better.

           One way to treat the flu before it happens is to get your child

           . This will reduce their likelihood of getting the illness when they come in contact with someone who is carrying it. If given promptly (highly recommended in the fall of each year), they can be highly effective.

           When Can My Child Go Back to School?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           If your child has the flu or is showing signs of the flu, it is advised that they stay home from school and other activities. More specifically, they should remain home until 24 hours after their symptoms begin to subside, primarily a fever, without the help of any fever-reducing medication. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           It is always a good idea to follow the protocol for your child’s school or daycare, too. Teach your child to wash their hands thoroughly and to cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze. Developing these habits early will not only reduce the spread, but it can reduce their risk, too.
